About the poet and poem:-
Periasamy Thoran was a renowned Tamil writer. He was born in the year 1908 and lived up to the age of eighty one. He died in the year 1987. He became famous as a short writer and then a poet. But he got very high recognition for publishing. General Encyclopedia in Tamil in ten volumes. The encyclopedia was edited by periasamy. After the Publication of general Encyclopedia he compiled and edited another encyclopedia in Tamil for children.
In writing poem Thoron preferred prose-poem and sonnet. His works include collection of poems, ‘Tamgaeangle’ which is a short story book and collection of essays entitled Pubin Sirippu. He was honored with the prestigious award of Padma Bhusan by the government of Sudia and ‘Kalalmamani’ from Tamilnadu Govt.
This poem entitled ‘The Empty Heart’ or ‘Kaurai Kudam’ in Tamil throws light on human weakness for gold or wealth. Man aspires to acquire money. This lusti for money never dies and ultimately this lust ruins the life of man.

पेरियासामी थोरन एक प्रसिद्ध तमिल लेखक थे। उनका जन्म वर्ष 1908 में हुआ था और वे अस्सी वर्ष की आयु तक जीवित रहे। वर्ष 1987 में उनका निधन हो गया। वह एक छोटे लेखक और फिर एक कवि के रूप में प्रसिद्ध हुए। लेकिन उन्हें प्रकाशन के लिए बहुत उच्च पहचान मिली। दस संस्करणों में तमिल में सामान्य विश्वकोश। विश्वकोश को पेरिआस्मि द्वारा संपादित किया गया था। सामान्य ज्ञानकोश के प्रकाशन के बाद उन्होंने बच्चों के लिए तमिल में एक और विश्वकोश का संकलन और संपादन किया।
कविता लिखने में थोरन ने गद्य-कविता और सॉनेट को प्राथमिकता दी। उनकी रचनाओं में कविताओं का संग्रह, ‘तमन्नागल’ शामिल है, जो एक लघु कथा पुस्तक है और पुबिन पिप्पु नामक निबंधों का संग्रह है। उन्हें सुदिया सरकार द्वारा पद्म भूषण के प्रतिष्ठित पुरस्कार और तमिलनाडु सरकार के ‘कलाममणि’ से सम्मानित किया गया।
यह कविता तमिल में Heart द खाली दिल ’या ud कौरई कुदम’ शीर्षक से सोने या धन के लिए मानवीय कमजोरी पर प्रकाश डालती है। मनुष्य धन प्राप्त करने की आकांक्षा रखता है। पैसे के लिए यह वासना कभी नहीं मरती है और अंततः यह वासना मनुष्य के जीवन को बर्बाद कर देती है।
